THE minimum distance for ends will stay at 23m after World Bowls knocked back a proposal for the length to be changed to 21m.

The proposal came from the Royal NSW Bowling Association, which also pushed unsuccessfully for an end to the tactic of giving away the mat.

One change that was approved will see the tie-breaker in sets play decided by shots won rather than ends.

If scores are tied after the three extra ends, another end will be played to determine an ultimate winner.
