Nelson Bay Sign Antrim In Major Club-selection Coup

NELSON Bay have signed NSW representative Terry Antrim as bowls development manager.
Antrim, who made his debut for NSW in the three-Test series against ACT earlier this year, will play his first game for Nelson Bay on Saturday against Hamilton North at Hamilton North in the Newcastle district No.2-grade pennant competition.Nelson Bay chief executive Mark White said Nelson Bay were excited by the signing of Antrim."It is a big coup for the club," White said.Nelson Bay, equal leaders in their section, also have former state representive Brian Bateman and current Newcastle district representative Bryce Williams in their team.? Windale Gateshead upset defending titleholders Soldiers Point 52-51 in the opening round of the Newcastle District No 1 grade midweek pennant last Wednesday with Glen Solomons and Frank Botham their two successful skippers. Kurri Kurri made a strong start downing Raymond Terrace 67-40.? Defending titleholders Peter Redman, Greg John, David [Charlie] Collins and Neil Dell commence their defence of the Newcastle district fours championship on Sunday.The Toronto Workers quartet meet the Adamstown combination of Jay Daley, Matthew Trail, Peter Richards and Darren Johnstone in an opening-round encounter at Wallsend. ? Ettalong Memorial gained some consolation from their defeat by Kurri Kurri in the Invitation Big Bowls Challenge grand final at Nelson Bay on Friday night when they were successful in the draw to host next year's final. ? Chris Taylor (Swansea Workers) went one better in the Newcastle district junior pairs final at Raymond Terrace on Friday night.Taylor, runner-up last year, this time had Natasha Van Eldik (Raymond Terrace) as his lead and they defeated Sam Morgan and Jarrod Gorsuch 28-13 in the final.But in the singles final at Warners Bay on Sunday, Taylor was beaten 31-20 by Daniel Hill (Mayfield West). ? Wayne Smith, Craig Thompson, Jay Walls and Andrew Smith proved too strong in the Lambton fours championship, beating Dean Sharman, Charlie Baker, Kris Murtagh and Chad Sutton 26-9 in the decider.
