MOONEE Ponds champion Mark Jacobsen took the Premier division lawn bowls preliminary final by the scruff of the neck yesterday, leading by example and audible command.
The Ponds jumped Essendon from the opening end on Ivanhoe's carpet-like 14-second turf and Essendon could not cut the gap to below eight. Jacobsen's rink inspired the others with a 36-12 belting of Anthony Mathison's rink.Rob Robinson (lead) and Dale Kett (third) were outstanding, and Jacobsen's second, Richard Kopcewicz, tidied up his game after tea.Adam Galloway's rink did its bit with a 14-shot win over Essendon's Adam Boyd.Robert Doody, who jumped clubs mid-season from Essendon to the Ponds, was on the receiving end when his rink was punished by opposing skip David Donaldson 9-33. It was the Donaldson rink keeping the Bombers in it and the body language was loud with each conversion.Moonee Ponds won a place in next Sunday's grand final at the Mulgrave Country Club, playing Melbourne, which had a week off after last week's semi-final win.The division one preliminary final at Bennettswood was a no-contest between Rosamond and Burwood.Burwood started nervously, trailing 3-15 after 29 ends, and it got worse. At the break, it was 55-34, and from then on, Burwood scored only 19 shots over the remaining 47 ends, losing 106-53. Rosamond looked polished and was inspired by first-season coach Graeme Bridge, who led Burwood's star Barrie Jackett from the start to win 28-12.Burwood's Ian Warner had the biggest hiding from Steve Fowler 30-9. Rosamond advances to the grand final next Saturday at Ivanhoe against the unbackable Clayton. The division two grand final is at Bennettswood next Saturday between MCC and Keysborough. Both gain promotion to division one.
