A FIRE that started in a cooking vat caused significant damage to Kembla Heights Bowls and Recreation Club last night.

The fire began just after 7pm in the club's Thai restaurant.

Wollongong station commander Tony Camilleri said when crews arrived the fire had spread into the roof of the building.

"Two crews with breathing apparatus extinguished the fire," Mr Camilleri said.

"The smoke heat was contained to the kitchen, but there is smoke damage to the remainder of the premises."

About 10 people were in the club when the fire started, but all were quickly evacuated and no one was injured.

Fire crews from Wollongong, Dapto and Unanderra stations and Mt Kembla Rural Fire Service attended.
