Junior Fours Feel The Heat In Semi-finals

ILLAWARRA Zone 16 junior bowls team couldn't overcome a red-hot Zone 6 in the semi-finals of the State Junior Lawn Bowls Championship fours at Warilla yesterday.
After an impressive run through the preliminary rounds, it was hoped the Illawarra side could contend for the title but they met their match against the eventual champions, and were defeated 23-14.The Zone 6 fours, representing Newcastle and Taree, contained the winner of the junior singles, Sam Twining. Twining had defeated Zone 6 player Jesse Noronha, who was defending champion on Tuesday in the semi-final of the under 18 singles.The Illawarra side of Noronha, Riley Wells, Brody Jobson and Jake Lawton had put together some excellent performances but left their run one match short of the final.In the decider, the Hunter team took on a Zone 1 side, representing the North Coast who were in-form after an upset 29-16 win over Zone 10 in their semi-final.Zone 1 couldn't maintain their giant-killing form in the final, trailing 18-6 early before charging home to close to within two shots before losing 21-17.The pairs competition begins today with the finals held tomorrow.ResultsSemi-finals: Zone 1 (J Heffernan, J Speers, R Wilson, A Teys) 29 bt Zone 10 (M Smith, L Katague, R Wilson, P Web) 16.Zone 6 (R Wells, B Jobson, J Lawton, S Twining) 21 bt Zone 16 (S Stojcevska, M Bayo, K Johannes, J Noronha) 14.
