11-year-old Mason Gunson, son of club members Bryce and Angela Gunson, is the latest homegrown product to come out of the West Australian club.
In only his first year of bowls, it hasn’t taken the young protege long to make an impact.
“Mason played his first pennant match filling in after a late withdrawal in the Ladies Pennants competition. He came home with all his money intact, and with a bonus packets of chips – he was spoilt rotten by his opposition,” said club selector Craig Hamilton.
The club has always strived to build and maintain a strong juniors presence in the City of Bayswater, involving local primary and high schools in the sport of bowls and spreading positives messages about the game.
Hence, it’s no surprise to see talents like Mason come through the ranks, aided by the fact his parents Bryce and Angela are also prominent bowlers, with dad playing in Morley’s top grade and mum having spent some time in the WA State Development squad.
In his first year of bowls, Mason has won Morley’s Club Championship Triples (with dad and Anthony Provost) and in the process becoming the youngest player to win a club event ever at Morley, reached the semi-finals of the Morley Club Fours Championship and was runner-up in the Novice Singles event.
Not a bad debut year at the ripe old age of just 11.
“We are just so proud of Mason’s achievements so far. For someone so young, we have managed his integration into the club carefully to ensure he has been looked after. I see big things for Mason in the future,” said Club President Vince Princi.
The club continues to seek our more opportunities to coach at schools, with the ultimate goal to establish a full junior program at the club.
With Mason’s feats along with a host of other promising junior results, Morley is certainly a hot-bed of talent.
