2019 Asia Pacific Championships: Friday Finals wrap

by Bowls Australia on June 28, 2019

The BCiB Australian Jackaroos have produced a barnstorming finish to the 2019 Asia Pacific Championships, collecting three gold medals on the final day.

Australia claimed victory in the Women’s Pairs, Triples and Men’s Fours to close out the event, with Ray Pearse claiming bronze a day earlier on Thursday in the Men’s Singles.

The Jackaroos efforts on the final day also saw them claim the Overall Women’s Trophy as well as a runner-up placing in the Overall Men’s standings.

The gold rush began with the Australian Women’s Pairs, with Lynsey Clarke and Kelsey Cottrell comprehensively beating sentimental favourites Piwen Karkar and Catherine Wimp from Papua New Guinea in the morning session.

Not to be outdone, the foursome of Barrie Lester, Aaron Teys, Nathan Rice and Aron Sherriff emerged from six shots down after 10 ends to end up 21-17 victors and gold medalists just five ends later.

The Women’s Triples final saw one of the more devastating displays by a skipper in recent times when Australia’s Bec Van Asch lead her teammates Natasha Scott and Carla Krizanic to an emphatic gold medal win over the incredibly competitive Malaysian trio of Auni Kamis, Alyani Jamil and Azalina Arshad.

With the Jackaroos off to a flying start only to lose the lead at the halfway point of the match, the girls rose to the occasion to make it three gold medals from four events on the day.
