2019 Asia Pacific Championships: Saturday Finals wrap

by Bowls Australia on June 22, 2019

Australia has medalled in three of four disciplines as the 2019 Asia Pacific Championships reached the halfway-point on Saturday at Broadbeach on the Gold Coast.

Aron Sherriff’s rich vein of form, which yielded him the 2019 Australian Open Singles and Pairs titles a little over a week ago at the very same venue, was again one of the major talking points of the day, with the Gold Coast-local producing a dominant display alongside Barrie Lester and Aaron Teys to secure the Men’s Triples gold medal over New Zealand.

The trio were victorious 21-12 after racing away to a substantial early lead before their Kiwi opponents steadied and force the match into several decisive ends, where all three Australians rose to the occasion.

Elsewhere, Australia’s Men’s Pairs combination of Ray Pearse and Nathan Rice were valiant in defeat to New Zealand pair Shannon McIlroy and Gary Lawson, falling on the very last bowl of the match in what was a brilliant final.

The Aussies trailed by as much as nine shots throughout the match and never had control of the lead, but ten shots in three ends (including a remarkable full six collect on one end) late in the piece saw the duo rally to have scores level going into the last end.

Earlier on Friday, Australia’s Women’s Fours team of Lynsey Clarke, Carla Krizanic, Rebecca Van Asch and Natasha Scott went down in their semi-final against Malaysia, managing a bronze medal for their efforts.

The 2019 Asia Pacific Championships will continue from Monday, June 24, with the Men’s Singles & Fours and Women’s Pairs & Triples to commence, concluding with finals on Friday. Bowls Australia will live-stream selected matches daily for the remainder of the event.
