2019 UK Tour: Jackaroos share spoils following Scotland Test Series

by Bowls Australia on July 15, 2019

The BCiB Australian Jackaroos have shared the spoils with Scotland following the second Test Series of their 14-day tour of the UK.

Sunday’s final session of play saw Scotland secure the open series 2-1, while Australia’s para-sport team emerged from a 1-0 test deficit to claim the series 2-1.

Three wins from as many rinks on Sunday was the catalyst in the para-sport squad’s change in fortunes, with all members of the team contributing significantly to the third test and overall series win.

As for the open team, the Jackaroos fought hard in an ultra-competitive morning session, coming up trumps in the team disciplines but falling short in the singles, with some individual brilliance from the Scots enough for them to do the damage in familiar conditions at Leamington Spa. with the Scots in singles and in fours.

Australia needed to win three of the four rubbers in order to force a countback on shots for the series, but it was Scotland who emerged victorious by the solitary one rink.

National Coach Steve Glasson said he and his staff were pleased with how the squad had fared thus far.

“Suffice to say the Jackaroos are being extremely well looked after as well as certainly enjoying the challenges and learning a great deal about the UK conditions. In particular, the style of play required here against such quality opposition,” he said.

“Our sincere thanks again to the Commonwealth Games Australia, Royal Leamington Spa Bowls Club, Warwick District Council and of course Bowls Scotland and their fabulous team for journeying to Birmingham to compete with us.”

The Jackaroos have now made the journey across the border to Wales, where they will commence their third Test Series of the tour at Sophia Gardens from 5:30pm AEST, Monday, July 15.

Bowls Australia would also like to extend its appreciation to Commonwealth Games Australia (CGA) for supporting and funding the BCiB Australian Jackaroos’ tour of the UK, in preparation for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
