2023 Australian Indoor Championships preview

by Val Febbo on August 9, 2023

The 2023 Australian Indoor Championships kicks off next week at Club Tweed for what is sure to be the tournament’s most exciting edition yet.

Both draws are littered with talent, with some tantalising prospects in the early rounds to whet the appetite for what is to come later in the week.

The 2022 champions in Kelsey Cottrell and Aron Sherriff will both return to the scene of one of their numerous triumphs last year, with both saluting in the decider against Brianna Smith and Dylan Fisher respectively.

Cottrell opens her account against Darwin’s Karen Lane, while Sherriff will face off with Queanbeyan’s Adam Wallace in the round of 32 as all participants require five victories to hoist one of the sport’s most illustrious trophies.

On the opposite side of the draw to Cottrell is Cassandra Millerick, who toppled her former club mate in one of the most enthralling Australian Open finals to date just a few short weeks ago.

The Moama product will take on Carolyn Glen from Kurri Kurri in New South Wales as she looks to maintain her national dominance in singles play.

Right at Home Jackaroo Chloe Stewart will be in action at her home club as she launches her campaign against Lynne Wood, with a prospect of taking on Emerging Jackaroo and former Club Tweed member Jessie Cottell in the round of 16.

Cottell’s fellow Emerging Jackaroo Chloe Morrison will take her place in the draw, as will former Australian international Kate Carriage, who has been pitted against 2022 quarterfinalist Eugenie Muncaster in the opening round.

Commonwealth and World Champion Ellen Falkner will play the event for the first time and look to put on a show at her new club, and she could meet former Scottish international Kay Moran in the second round.

Other notables in the draw include South Australia’s Laini McGorman, Western Australian Over 60’s Jackaroo Lisa Featherby, Pathway Jackaroo Reese Finn-Young and Australian Open over 60’s women’s pairs runner up Carol White.

The men’s draw sees former Australian representative Ray Pearse sit in the same quarter as Sherriff, looming as a dangerous prospect for the defending champion considering his prowess as a singles player.

Ben Twist is another headline in the draw that is set to face home club hero Adam McKeown in the round of 32, with the prospect of taking on 2022 Australian Open multi disability men’s singles runner up Frank Krslovic in the second round.

Twist’s fellow Jackaroo Jesse Noronha will also take his place in the draw, placed in the same quarter as Tasmanian star Taelyn Male.

The Australian Indoor Championships will run from August 14-17, 2023, and be live streamed on Bowls Australia’s Facebook page.
