2023 World Bowls Championships: Day 7 wrap

by Val Febbo on September 5, 2023

It was yet another sensational day for the Right at Home Jackaroos as the reversed disciplines kicked off at the 2023 World Bowls Championships on the Gold Coast, sustaining nine wins from ten contests in the Sunshine State.

Men’s singles:
Reigning two-time Commonwealth Games singles champion Aaron Wilson embarked on his quest for World Championships glory in style with a trio of victories to commence section four action.

The opening session of the day saw Wilson maintain his medal winning form from the men’s pairs with a 21-4 victory over Zafar Yaman of Turkiye.

The Cabramatta product launched into his second match against Niue’s Stanley Frederick Tafatu and ran away to a 21-5 salutation.

In the concluding session, Wilson again exhibited ruthlessness to account for Fiji’s Kushal Pillay 21-8.

The New South Welshman sits in first place in section four ahead of fellow undefeated combatants Tony Cheung and Daniel Salmon, having only conceded 17 shots.

Men’s fours:
After a glorious weekend that saw Corey Wedlock, Carl Healey and Aron Sherriff claim the nation’s first men’s triples crown since 1966, the addition of Aaron Teys into the fours lineup seemed to invigorate the team.

Day seven began with a hefty 22-5 victory over the Philippines before backing up with a professional display against Malta in blustery conditions at Club Musgrave.

A combined 13 shots across three ends in the middle of the encounter set up a brilliant 21-5 win and an undefeated morning.

The team enjoyed a bye in the final session to sit in third in the section behind Wales and Namibia who played three matches.

Women’s pairs:
The Commonwealth Games winning duo of Kristina Krstic and Ellen Ryan were tested out at Paradise Point, finishing the afternoon with a pair of wins and a defeat.

It was a routine commencement of the day as the pair claimed a 23-7 victory over Japan before facing a humungous scare against the dangerous Switzerland.

Down for most of the encounter against Marianne Kunzle and Laura Butler, a whopping five on the penultimate end saw them sneak home with an 18-16 win.

The final contest of the day saw Malta’s Rebecca Rixon and Connie Rixon get the better of the Australian pair, racing away to a 19-10 victory.

Krstic and Ryan are placed third in section four behind the undefeated English team and the Netherlands on shot difference with a big day tomorrow.

Women’s triples:
It was a routine day for the women’s triples team of Dawn Hayman, Lynsey Clarke and Kelsey Cottrell as they enjoyed an unblemished pair of sessions.

The trio were given a first session bye before celebrating Clarke’s 450th international cap in style with a 26-11 victory over Hong Kong China, before backing up to overcome Argentina 19-10.

Australia is placed in second in section two behind Ireland, who are yet to have the bye.
