2023 World Bowls Championships: Right at Home Jackaroos day nine wrap

by Val Febbo on September 7, 2023

The Right at Home Jackaroos will feature in the knockout phase of three of the four disciplines contested this weekend following an undefeated day across the Gold Coast at the 2023 World Bowls Championships.

Women’s pairs duo Ellen Ryan and Kristina Krstic missed qualification by a point and will not contest the post sectional rounds.

Men’s singles:
Two-time Commonwealth Games champion Aaron Wilson was in fine touch across his opening two matches of the day, only conceding just four shots combined across both contests against Argentina’s Ricardo Rubinat and Spain’s Terry Morgan.

With his concluding sectional encounter against Frank De Vries of the Netherlands somewhat inconsequential, having already booked passage into the quarters, Wilson was in for a fight.

Leading for the majority of the contest, the Cabramatta product had his margin dwindled and even fell behind late in the piece as the Dutchman secured a 20-19 buffer.

However, such is Wilson’s skill and prowess, he was able to notch up a two to seal a sensational victory.

Men’s fours:
It was yet another successful day for the quartet of Corey Wedlock, Aaron Teys, Carl Healey and Aron Sherriff as they netted three wins from as many matches.

Commencing the morning with a 23-8 win over Japan at Club Helensvale, the team followed up with a tight 11-9 victory against Norfolk Island.

After the scare, the unit would trounce Namibia 21-4 to finish five points clear on top of their section.

Women’s triples:
Just one match was partaken by Dawn Hayman, Lynsey Clarke and Kelsey Cottrell on Thursday with the final round taking place in the middle session of play.

Against a spirited Israel outfit, a blistering five ends early saw Australia race out a 17-1 lead before finishing the match with a 31-8 scoreline.

The trio concluded the section well on top, five points clear of Ireland.

Women’s pairs:
It was heartbreak for Krstic and Ryan in the pairs today despite going undefeated from their three games, as the team missed out on the quarterfinals by one point to Malta’s Rebecca and Connie Rixon.

The opening contest of the day saw the green and old run out to a substantial lead against Hong Kong China’s Angel So and Helen Cheung, before the latter pair claimed a four to get within one shot with an end to play.

Australia would hold on for a remarkable 17-15 victory before taking down the Netherlands 30-8 and Fiji 29-5 with two comprehensive displays to conclude their campaign.
