2023 World Bowls Championships: Right at Home Jackaroos Day Three Wrap
It was a drama filled final day of sectional play for six of the seven disciplines on Thursday, with Australia advancing to all knockout stages to be played on Thursday.
Women’s singles:
Ellen Ryan has all but secured her place in the women’s singles knockout rounds, after three more big wins on Thursday.
Ryan started the day with a thumping 21-1 win over Zimbabwe’s Jane Rigby, before two solid 21-6 wins over Sara Trotter from Cyprus and Botswana’s Lephai Marea Modutlwa.
She is now unbeaten from 9 games, and is close to certain to advance to knockout rounds with two sectional games still to play.
Women’s fours:
Having already secured their spot in the quarter finals, Kristina Krstic, Dawn Hayman, Lynsey Clarke and Kelsey Cottrell finished sectional play in style on Thursday.
Playing just one match, the Jackaroo quartet faced India in their final sectional game at Broadbeach. They continued their dominant form, winning 27-5 to finish sectional play unbeaten atop section one. Canada secured second spot in Australia’s group.
Australia exit the group with a huge +75 shot difference, to set up a quarter final berth against Hong Kong China, who finished second in section four with four wins, a draw and two losses. They will face off at Broadbeach on Friday at 8.30am.
Men’s pairs:
After a hard-fought loss yesterday, Aaron Teys and Aaron Wilson bounced back to record three wins and secure a pairs quarter final spot.
Wins over Singapore, Norfolk Island and Malta at Musgrave Hill booked a knockout spot for the duo, with Wilson still vying for back-to-back world pairs titles.
They will face off against Scotland’s Jason Banks and Iain McLean in the quarter final at Broadbeach on Friday.
Men’s triples:
It was a drama filled final day of sectional play for Australia’s men’s triples, with plenty of nerves right until the end.
Malaysia edged Australia out by one-shot in a thriller in the first match of the day, meaning Australia had to be perfect from there on out.
Corey Wedlock, Aron Sherriff and Carl Healey bounced back with a strong win over Fiji, leaving a final round match against France in the way of them and a quarter final berth.
It was the underdog French team that stole the show early, collecting a massive five on the third end to move as far ahead as 7-1.
The Jackaroos chipped their way back into the game, retaking the lead, but the French hung in there.
They forced scores to 16-16 after 15 ends, with Australia leading by one heading into the final end.
The drama continued on the final end, with lightning forcing players from the green with just three bowls to play.
After more a delay of at least more than 40 minutes, play re-commenced with a do or die final end for Australia.
The Jackaroos handled the wet green better than their French counterparts, holding on for the win and advancing to the quarter finals.
Para men’s pairs:
Damien Delgado and James Reynolds enjoyed a rest day on Thursday, having completed their sectional games earlier in the week.
They will face off against Singapore, who finished second in their section. That semi final will be played at Broadbeach on Friday at 2.45pm.
Para women’s pairs:
After a slow start to sectional competition, Cheryl Lindfield and Serena Bonnell booked their place in knockout play of the para women’s pairs, finishing second after group play.
A final round four-shot win over Scotland booked the duo into the top two spot, set to face off against the Scottish pair again in the semi final tomorrow.
Vision impaired mixed pairs:
Despite a narrow one-shot loss in the last sectional round, Jacky Hudson and Jake Fehlberg have secured a semi final berth in the mixed para pairs.
Taking on New Zealand in the final sectional round, they fell short 9-10 but will have a chance at silverware in tomorrow’s semi final.
They will face off against Scotland in the semi final, with Australia taking honours in their sectional game earlier in the week.

The World Bowls Championships is being staged across five Gold Coast clubs until September 10, with the first lot of finals staged at Helensvale this weekend, before the able-body disciplines reverse in the second week of competition.
