BA welcome two new board appointments

In a major coup for the sport of bowls, former Australian Jackaroos vice-captain Wayne Turley and former Brisbane Roar Football Club Chief Executive Officer Eugenie Buckley have taken up positions on the Bowls Australia board.

Turley, a Commonwealth Games gold and silver medallist, brings with him an intricate knowledge of the sport from a grass-roots level right through to international competition.

An accomplished businessman in his own right, Turley is currently the bowls coordinator of one of the nation’s largest bowling clubs, Taren Point in NSW, and also owns and operates the Turley Bowlsworld store in conjunction with wife Claire, a current member of the nation’s top high performance tier, the Jackaroos.

Turley’s position on the board is as an elected director, filling the casual vacancy created by the recent resignation of Western Australia’s John Hannah, and will conclude at the 2013 Annual General Meeting.

As well as extensive practical experience, Buckley has formal legal and financial qualifications (LLM, LLB (Hons) and B Com,) and her experience and expertise lies in the commercial side of sport with a strong background in legal and business affairs through her current position as Principal of Suiko Consulting and previous roles as CEO of Brisbane Roar, CEO/Tournament Director of the ICC Women’s World Cup Australia 2009, and General Manager of Legal and Business Affairs for Football Federation Australia, among others.

Bowls Australia now boast three female representatives among its eight member board, with Buckley filling one of the two available appointed board director positions.

Bowls Australia CEO Neil Dalrymple said the two new directors would contribute enormously to the Bowls Australia board.

“Eugenie and Wayne are both fantastic appointments; Wayne brings a detailed understanding of the sport at all levels, while Eugenie provides an important independent, expert commercial insight from outside of the day-to-day bowls world,” Dalrymple said.

“The composition of the board now also greater reflects the importance Bowls Australia places on gender equality.

“We are committed to improving equality in our sport, both on and off the green, and the appointment of Eugenie not only improves the gender balance of our board, but she also brings an extensive knowledge and expertise with her from a wide range of sporting bodies.

“These two appointments emphasise the importance of board diversity and acquiring board directors with specific attributes to help raise the profile of the sport and provide best practice governance.

“We are fortunate to be able to tap into an impressive array of skills and experience from these two appointments and they will greatly enhance the strategic direction of the sport nationally.”

Bowls Australia congratulate Wayne and Eugenie on their appointments as Bowls Australia board directors.
