BA welcomes Board appointment

Bowls Australia (BA) has announced the appointment of Matt Burgess to its Board of Directors.

Burgess, who fills a Casual Vacancy role on the organisation’s Board, is a practicing NSW solicitor, having run his own sports legal and strategy practice, Evolve Sports Group, for over 10 years across both Australian and USA markets.

He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in the sports industry to the role, having worked with broadcasters, government agencies, sport technology innovators, digital media solutions for broadcast and content sharing, and with sporting organisations on membership demographic issues.

A member of Kingscliff Bowling Club, Burgess has a passion and deep understanding of a wide variety of sports, most notably with surfing and the World Surf League, where he was Associate General Counsel for 12 years, before becoming Head of Sports Integrity.

Burgess will hold office until next year’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), when he will become eligible to stand for re-election.

Burgess’ appointment comes three months after the Board elected South Australia’s Bob Boorman as President, and just a month after Paul Zerella was elected to the Board at this year’s AGM.

Zerella, who previously sat on Bowls SA’s Board for more than three years and has also been on the board of Adelaide Bowling Club, has been involved in the sport at a pennant level for more than 15 years, and has been the Managing Director of Project Wine since 2008.
