BPL13, the record Premier League

by Val Febbo on April 27, 2021

As the dust begins to settle in the aftermath of last week’s BPL13, a clearer picture emerges of the sheer volume of records that were either equalled or broken.

Club Pine Rivers was ground zero for the Tweed Heads Ospreys’ historic third BPL title triumph, joining the Sydney Lions as the only franchise to achieve the feat, but having done so after just four appearances in the competition after debuting at BPL10 in November, 2019.

Furthermore, the Ospreys became just the second team, again with the Lions, to achieve back-to-back tournament wins following their victory in Moama at the end of February.

Astonishingly, the trio of Aaron Teys, Corey Wedlock and Chloe Stewart recorded a staggering 13 wins in a row, dating back from the last four matches of BPL12 through to the first nine matches at Pine Rivers, shattering the previous record.

That nine-game winning streak to commence play in Brisbane equalled the tally set by the Melbourne Pulse on the Murray at the beginning of the year as the longest unbeaten run to begin any BPL.

Teys etched his name into the history books with his fourth title, joining fellow superstar Aron Sherriff as the only two to reach the milestone.

The now dual MVP joined an illustrious group of Sherriff, Ryan Bester, Scott Thulborn and Alex Marshall as multiple recipients of the award.

The 27-year-old, along with Sherriff, Bester and Steamers’ teammate Michael Walker, now share the title of most Grand Finals appearances, with the quartet appearing in five apiece.

The Steamers themselves extended the record of most finals series played, with eight, and now hold the outright title of most Grand Final appearances as a franchise with five.

Murray sat alongside Sydney and Brisbane with four before BPL13.

The Moama Bowling Club franchise now boasts the undesirable title of most runner-up finishes, with three, alongside former team Adelaide Endurance.

Club Pine Rivers waited 523 days for BPL action, but the narratives and highlights that emerged from the eagerly awaited event made it all the more memorable.

Bowls Premier League action will kick off again from November 9-14, 2021.
