#BPL16 Day One wrap: Lions end day on top

by Val Febbo on November 7, 2022

The Sydney Lions have ended the opening day of #BPL16 on top of the table following an interesting trio of rounds to kick off proceedings at Club Pine Rivers, which saw each team register at least one win and none going undefeated.

The four-time champions fell victim to a brilliant Melbourne Pulse in the opening match despite winning the second set 15-0.

Gary Kelly sealed the win with the final bowl in the tiebreak to ensure the defending champions would begin the event in winning ways.

Sydney would rebound in brilliant fashion with an 11-0 9-2 win over the Perth Suns in round two before overcoming the Gold Coast Hawks in a tiebreak after dropping the opening set.

Moama Steamers sit in second place after three rounds after a pair of victories, the first of which coming against the Melbourne eXtreme, ensuring the match would not head to a tiebreak after coming back from 0-6 in the second set to level it and begin with a victory.

After losing to the Tasmania Tridents in a tiebreak in the second round the trio of Aron Sherriff, Ryan Bester and Cassandra Millerick took down the Tweed Heads Ospreys in the final clash of the day in yet another breaker.

The eXtreme end day one in third place after a peculiar afternoon that saw a set in each of the franchise’s matches drawn.

They fell to the Steamers in the first round but would take home a pair of wins against the Hawks and Tridents to conclude the day.

The Pulse finished in fourth place after winning their first two games against the Lions and Ospreys before falling to the Moreton Bay Pirates in round three.

Perth round out the top five with a 2-1 ledger following a pair of wins over the Pirates and the Adelaide Pioneers.

The Ospreys, Hawks, Pirates, Pioneers and Tridents round out the ladder all with one win out of the three.

Day two of #BPL16 kicks off at 9am AEST tomorrow morning.
