Bundanoon back from the brink and into Zone 5 pennant competition

by Bowls Australia on March 6, 2020

Bowlers in a Southern Highlands club in NSW returned to their home green for their first pennant clash since 2016 on Saturday, February 29.

It was a special occasion for Bundanoon Club bowlers, with the game marking a significant milestone in the club’s rejuvenation, following near closure almost exactly three years ago, and the efforts of the board and members in making the club a welcoming community space.

The recent refurbishments inside the club and to the green have improved the experience for all who visit the club, with the new bar a feature inside and the recently renovated green improving standards across the venue.

The club has been active in reaching out to the community, with the club’s first twilight Jack Attack season in 2019 seeing teams compete from local business, sporting and community groups.

The community engagement doesn’t end there, with Bundanoon Primary and Moss Vale High students as well as the Rosnel Hostel residents making regular sojourns to keep active and play bowls on the Bundanoon Club green.

Pleasingly, all the hard work is paying off – both on and off the green – and the club has been able to field a team in the Zone 5 (Southern Highlands & South West Sydney) pennant season in 2020.

The club will compete against sides from Picton, Camden, Bowral, Bargo and Campbelltown. Zone 5 secretary Col Crossingham and Bowls Australia Regional Bowls Manager Nick Hind have worked with the club during their four year absence from pennant competition and are both very pleased to have Bundanoon back playing.

The Bundanoon bowlers have focused on recruitment and development of their players with the pennant team fielding a huge six players on pennant debut and further new players waiting in the wings for the chance to represent their club.

It was a successful return for Bundanoon, winning all three rinks and the day overall 87-37.

The club is looking to continue to grow, improve and involve the community and will be hosting a fundraiser for the local RFS brigades on Wednesday March 25. The Bundanoon Club is always welcoming anyone to visit the club and play bowls, social and barefoot bowls are played each Wednesday & Sunday from 1pm.
