Queensland’s Damien Delgado has been awarded the BCiB Bowler With a Disability award at Bowls Australia’s 2021 Awards Night.

Delgado has performed supremely on the green over the past year, claiming gold in singles and pairs at the 2020 Queensland Multi Disability Championships.

His form continued at the 2021 Queensland Open Championships, where he became the first wheelchair disability player to reach an open singles final.

At the Australian Open in June, Delgado finished as the runner-up in the multi disability singles and was a member of a fours team that reached the round of 16.

A member of Club Tweed, he leads for Wayne Turley OAM in the Tweed Heads Premier League division one pennant side.

Delgado reveals the award is unexpected and that he is ecstatic to become a recipient, thanking his loved ones and the club that have shared his journey.

“I’m very humbled, it’s unexpected to win, I’ve got some great competitors out there in the disability bowls,” he said.

“I must give a big shout out to my wife, we have three kids under six, but she allows me to play week in and week out, I couldn’t ask for a bigger support for what Jessica has given me.

“Also the great support from Tweed Heads [Club Tweed], they’ve always been behind me and are very accomodating for me around the greens and help in any way they can.

“I wouldn’t have been able to win this award without their support.”
