Fisher reels in golden catch

Former Australian player Dylan Fisher has claimed one of the sport’s biggest scalps in the opening round of the expanded $48,000 Australian Indoor Championships at Club Tweed.

Fisher reeled in freshly minted Commonwealth Games singles gold medallist Aaron Wilson by 1 shot in a dramatic tie-break, having recorded successive ends of full counts on the sixth and seventh ends of the second set to stretch the match to a tie-break, after dropping the opening set.

Wilson wasn’t the only big name to fall in the opening rubber of this year’s 64-player men’s and women’s event, with defending titleholder Robert Briglia bundled out in the first session, courtesy of Nuriootpa’s Stuart Forbes, while reigning champion Genevieve Delves and former women’s winner Natasha Van Eldik were late scratchings after forfeiting their positions due to personal circumstances.

Warilla-based Australian Jackaroos Corey Wedlock, Aaron Teys and Jesse Noronha all escaped the carnage of the knockout event’s opening round, as did Club Tweed’s local internationals Lynsey Clarke and Chloe Stewart.

Round one action continues across Tuesday’s 8.00am and 10.00am sessions, with the second round to be complete by the end of the day’s play at 10.00pm.

Wednesday will see the staging of the third round and quarter-finals, with semis and finals occurring across Thursday and Friday.
