Indoors whittled down to 16

The 2022 Australian Indoor Championships’ fields have been whittled down to the last 16 after the conclusion of the second day of action from Club Tweed.

Two full rounds have been completed across 12 sessions of play during the opening two days, culling the 64-player men’s and women’s singles fields, with just the semi-finalists set to remain after Wednesday’s further two rounds.

2018 champion Aaron Teys is now the only prospect capable of hoisting the trophy aloft on a second occasion in either events, while reigning Australian Open singles winners Aron Sherriff and Kelsey Cottrell both still remain a chance of claiming the coveted outdoor-indoor double.

Australian Jackaroos team-mates Corey Wedlock and Jesse Noronha are among Wednesday’s headline contests with a tantalising third round clash poised for 10am, with the winner a chance to face their fellow national teammate Teys in the quarter-final, should he advance in his third rubber on the neighbouring rink.

Cottrell will encounter Cassandra Millerick from 12pm, while Club Tweed members’ support will be split for local spearheads Chloe Stewart and Kira Bourke when they clash at 10am, while two-time Australian Champion of Champion Dawn Hayman and former Scottish international Kay Moran will tussle on a neighbouring rink in that session.

Third round and quarter-final action will take place tomorrow, ahead of Thursday and Friday’s semi-finals and finals.
