Ahead of next week’s World Bowls Championships, the Right at Home Jackaroos share their journeys across the years that has seen them selected for the sport’s showpiece event on the Gold Coast.

Up next, Cheryl Lindfield.

How did you get started in bowls?
Enjoyed watching bowls at Commonwealth Games in Brisbane in 1982 and followed in my parents footsteps into the sport.

Which was the first bowls club you became involved with?
Sunnybank Club which was not far from where the Commonwealth Games was held.

Which clubs have you been involved with throughout your journey?
Sunnybank Club and then helped to establish Brisbane Ladies Club in early 90’s which has been the most influential club as it opened up opportunities for women who worked full time like myself to play competitive bowls on weekends.

Who is your current club and how have they shown you support throughout your career?
The majority of support throughout my long career have been in clubs on the south side of Brisbane and I include my most recent club in Mt Gravatt. My most memorable times have been in team events where we support each other to do our best taking pride in our club.

Who has been the biggest influence on your bowls journey and why?
Maureen Hobbs from my first club at Sunnybank who played with distinction for Australia and supported me to be the best player I could be in the early days of by bowls journey

Is there a particular coach who has influenced your bowls journey the most?
I have learned from so many people who haven’t always had the role of coach but by far the outstanding coaches connected to Bowls Australia like Ellen Falkner, Karen Murphy, Lynsey Clarke, Gary Willis and Claire Turley provide so much to so many people

Why is the 2023 World Bowls Championships so important to you and the people who have helped you on your journey?
It is an honour to represent Australia on the world stage and be part of the first time para bowlers have been included in the World Championships. It will open up so many opportunities and dreams to para bowlers everywhere.
