Journey to the World Bowls Championships: Ellen Ryan

by Val Febbo on August 26, 2023

Ahead of next week’s World Bowls Championships, the Right at Home Jackaroos share their journeys across the years that has seen them selected for the sport’s showpiece event on the Gold Coast.

Up next, Ellen Ryan.

How did you get started in bowls?
My uncle invite my family and I down for a roll and I loved it.

Which was the first bowls club you became involved with?
Goulburn Railway Bowling Club

Which clubs have you been involved with throughout your journey?
Goulburn Railway Bowling Club and Cabramatta Bowling Club

Who is your current club and how have they shown you support throughout your career?
I joined Cabramatta Bowling Club in 2014. Joining Cabra was the start of improving my game! Being able to play alongside the best in the business, having the best coaches and such a supportive club both players and board directors has been the best! Love my mighty Bullants!

Who has been the biggest influence on your bowls journey and why?
My Mum. She has always supported my journey right from being there for our first club championship together to coming to watch me win gold at the Commonwealth Games!

Is there a particular coach who has influenced your bowls journey the most?
Karen Murphy. For many years I’ve been lucky enough to have her as a friend, team mate, idol and now coach. She is a brilliant person/player on and off the green with so much skill and determination. Having her with me rink side at Com Games was so beneficial for me learning from. Wouldn’t have won without her! I look forward to having her rink side with my for my world bowls singles journey and hopefully I can keep the women’s world singles title in Australia after Kazza winning in 2012 and 2016.

Why is the 2023 World Bowls Championships so important to you and the people who have helped you on your journey?
It’s the pinnacle of our sport and I am so honoured to be representing our country with a great bunch of people. To not only be there for my team mates but for all my family, friends, club mates, work friends and coaches that have shown me so much support over the years I can’t wait to hopefully do Australia proud. Aussie Aussie Aussie!
