Karen Murphy continued her happy hunting at Tweed Heads Shell Cove’s Karen Murphy will return to Warilla for the World Cup after clinching a sixth Australian Indoor title at Tweed Heads Bowling Club.

The Commonwealth Games pairs gold medallist and reigning world singles champion beat 51-year-old Maria Rigby 10-4, 10-4 in the Australian Indoor final to win her sixth title in seven years.

The victory earned Murphy the right to be Australia’s female representative in the World Cup at Warilla BC next year, joining Warilla’s defending men’s champion Jeremy Henry in a South Coast double for the tournament.

World No 2 Murphy, who could make a case as Australia’s greatest female player on the carpet surface, said it was a hard-fought final despite winning in straight sets.

“I knew it was going to be a tough match and it was,” Murphy said.

“Maria is such a great player and she played really well and the match was a lot tougher than 10-4, 10-4 suggests.”

And Murphy was especially proud to have her parents Frank and Lorraine watching on in the final.

“It was so great to have Mum and Dad here and to share this with them.”

Murphy, who also boasts five Golden Nugget trophies at Tweed Heads BC, beat Kim Saunders in the opening round, then Queensland junior Natasha Jones in the second round before proving too strong for Jane Bush and fellow Australian Jackaroo squad member Carla Odgers in the quarter-final and semi-final respectively.
