Samantha Shannahan steps down from Jackaroos duty

Australian Emerging Jackaroo Samantha Shannahan has made the difficult decision to step down from Jackaroos and state representation, citing an increased focus on her professional career in the workforce.

Shannahan, 30, was the 74th-capped female to represent Australia and recently notched up her 50th cap during the BCiB Australian Jackaroos’ tour of the UK in July.

She has been a long-time state representative for both New South Wales and Victoria, as well as being involved in Bowls Australia’s (BA) High Performance squads for over a decade, making her international debut at the 2008 Asia Pacific Merdeka Indoor Championships.

Having taken upon a more senior leadership role in her work career, Shannahan has advised that she would no longer be able to commit the considerable time away from her role to represent her state and country.

National Coach Steve Glasson thanked Shannahan for her contribution to the Jackaroos.

“While it’s with a heavy heart that we bid farewell to Sam, we certainly hope the book has not closed on her wonderful career at the elite level,” Glasson said.

“Sam has been involved with the Jackaroos over a number of years and has been a key contributor to the culture we have created and continue to forge.

“We wish Sam the best of luck in her professional career and thank her for her service to the sport at both a state and international level.”

At this stage, this is not an official retirement from Jackaroos or state representation for Sam, but an opportunity to step away concentrate on her working career.
