Schraner had to contend with two-time reigning international bowler of the year, Aron Sherriff (NSW), last year’s runner-up in the event, Anthony Keipe (Qld), and rising star Scott Thurlborn (SA), but did so with apparent ease on the slow greens at South Burnie.
The 32-year-old, who moved to the Apple Isle from Victoria three months ago for a lifestyle change, said he was over the moon with his efforts.
“I called it the section from hell and after battling a bit the last couple of months, all I wanted was to be competitive representing my new state,” Schraner said.
“The overnight rain suited me and I had to make the most it.
“The greens were on the slow side and it’s no stranger to anyone that I like them a bit pushy.
“Things went my way, I played a lot of good draw shots and I can’t complain with the outcome.”
Schraner said Sherriff was probably the biggest scalp of his three opponents.
“[Sherriff is] the world’s best player, there’s no argument about that,” he said.
“I had played him once before in singles and he belted me up in the Golden Nugget [tournament] — I only scored five off him.
“I became relaxed when I got off to a good start against him and it all just sort of happened from there.”
Schraner will meet Victorian Dylan Fisher into today’s gold medal showdown.
“He is equally as good as the players I played [yesterday],” the Rodman Bowls Club member said.
“I could wake up [today] and not have the form I had [yesterday] or it could all be good again.
“Same thing — I’ll need to draw well and hit the heads when I have to and hopefully the result takes care of itself.”
Today’s men’s and women’s finals of the Super 6 Championships (singles, pairs and triples) get under way at 9.30am at the South Burnie Bowls Club.
