Scott Thulborn calls time on international career

South Australian Scott Thulborn has today announced his retirement from international duty for Australia.

The 35-year-old represented Australia on 32 occasions having made his debut in 2017 and was part of the successful Trans Tasman and Multi Nations squads.

Thulborn was also notably the 2016 World Champion of Champions male singles champion at Club Helensvale on the Gold Coast, having also collected a bronze medal in the same event previously.

In communicating his decision to his Jackaroos teammates, Thulborn felt the time was right in stepping away from the green and gold.

“This decision has not come lightly. I have loved being a part of the squads and certainly every minute I have been a part of the Jackaroos family,” he said.

“I feel I can no longer give the full level of commitment necessary to the team and I am now looking at giving more of my time to my work, family and friends.

“I definitely need to thank my teammates for their friendship and support through the easy times and the tough.

“I have loads of great memories to depart with and will never forget the special moment of being presented with my no.143 cap by ‘Stocky’ (Dave Stockham), which will go down as one of the proudest moments through my bowls career.

“I will continue to play and enjoy my club and state bowls for the time being but certainly feel it is the right time in my life to spend less time on the greens and more time with my wonderful wife Stacey and amazing son Lucas.

A massive thank you for all the opportunities and to everyone that I have met, worked with, played with and against and go Aussies! I’m looking forward to watching and supporting the Jackaroos to many more famous wins in the near future!”

National Coach Steve Glasson thanked Thulborn for his contribution to representing Australia at the highest level.

“Scott has been a much-loved member of the Jackaroos family and we wish him well for the future away from the national team set-up,” he said.

“We acknowledge the nature of being an Australian representative brings with it a challenging schedule and we cannot fault Scott for wanting to spend more time with loved ones.

“While Scott was an outstanding competitor on the green and blessed with natural talent, he had an infectious personality to match and his presence will certainly be missed by the group.”
