The Nationals: Vics complete Senior Sides clean sweep
It was a clean sweep for Victoria at the first Australian Senior Sides Championships in nearly three years, with the Big V taking out both men’s and women’s honours at Broadbeach.
It was a thrilling final two rounds of play on Wednesday, with the champions not locked in until the final round.
It would be the Big V that would go on to clean sweep the event, winning the Glyn Bosisto MBE Overall trophy, the John Dobbie AM Men’s trophy as well as the Betty Collins OAM Women’s trophy.
Men
After six rounds of play, it came down to the final round to determine the 2022 men’s senior sides champion.
Victoria and South Australia went into the final round with five wins each, with the winner to take out the title.
The Vics managed a hard-fought seven-shot win over NSW in round six to go into the final game on top of the ladder, while SA comfortably took care of the Northern Territory to sit in second spot.
In a tight and tense final round, it was the Victorians who were able to come out in front, winning 64-55 and finishing ahead in two of three rinks.
Queensland finished the day with two losses, falling short against WA and NSW to sit outside the top three. NSW claimed the third spot on the podium, knocking over the host-state to do so.
WA rounded out their week with two wins to finish fifth. Tasmania also managed two victories on Wednesday.
Victoria’s rink skipped by Christopher Young would finish as the best four in the men’s competition, recording seven wins and a shot difference of 57.

Women
Victoria went into the final day in the box seat of the women’s competition, undefeated after five rounds.
The competition was nearly blown wide open in the sixth round, with NSW claiming two of three rinks but falling one shot short of Victoria.
A win over South Australia in the final round would guarantee Victoria the women’s crown, and win they did. They recorded an 11-shot win to bring to title back to Victoria.
Queensland would go on to finish in second place, with a six-shot loss to Victoria on Monday their only blemish of the week.
South Australia edged out Western Australia by rink points to finish third, with both teams recording four wins and three losses.
Queensland’s rink skipped by Susan Brady enjoyed the strongest week, finishing in front on five occasions, tying once and losing just once, with a massive 83 shot differential.
