‘Underdog’ champion Clarke stirs bowls passion with classmates

Weeks after his special Australian Open Under-18 Boys’ Singles title win, Joey Clarke appears to have had an impact on his fellow peers.

Park Beach’s Clarke took out the junior crown with a six-shot final win on the Gold Coast, streamed live on Facebook and watched on with support back home at his school of St John Paul College.

“A lot of the Sydney areas probably expected to win through. It was really good to surprise a lot of people, be the underdog and win it from that scenario,” Clarke told Prime7 North Coast News.

Clarke’s success appears to have rubbed off on his classmates, with interest in bowls at the school on the rise.

St John Paul College last week sent six teams to compete at the Northern NSW Inter School Challenge hosted at Sawtell Bowling Club.

Clarke’s story is another great reminder of how age is no barrier to enjoying bowls with your mates.
