Vale: Ron Tuckerman

Bowls Australia was saddened to hear of the recent passing of former President Ron Tuckerman.

Tuckerman boasted a long and distinguished bowls administration career, which saw him at the helm of his club, state and nation, first becoming President of ACT’s Yowani Country Club‘s bowls committee from 1974-77, before taking the reins of the ACT Bowls Association (now Bowls ACT) from 1986-1988 and eventually elected to the presidency of the Australian Bowling Council (now Bowls Australia) from 1992-94.

During his term at a national level, Tuckerman was an executive member of the World Bowls board, and member of their rules committee, and an executive member of Australian Commonwealth Games Association (now Commonwealth Games Australia).

In 1993 he coached an Australian under-25s tour to Malaysia and Hong Kong China, and in 1994 coached the Australian Jackaroos at the Commonwealth Games in Victoria, Canada.

Tuckerman is credited as having developed Bowls Australia’s first strategic plan, introduced the national interstate five-a-side tournament, saw the re-induction of the Jack-High Tournament and was instrumental in the acceptance of coloured clothing and narrow-biased bowls.

Tuckerman was awarded the Australian Sports Medal in 2000, was inducted in the ACT Sport Hall of Fame in 2010, and is a life member of Bowls ACT and Yowani.

Earlier this year, on May 7, Tuckerman notched up a momentous milestone in reaching his 500th pennant match at Yowani Bowls, although, sadly it was to be his last.
