Van Asch takes Apple Isle double

National representative Rebecca Van Asch won the women’s Tasmanian bowls championships held at Kings Meadows Bowls Club
on January 6.
About 40 women took part in yesterday’s singles knockout tournament.The Invermay bowler cruised into the semi-finals where she defeated
Sandy Bay’s Carol Bannister 25-15,before taking down East Launceston’s Raye Simpson 25-8 in the final.
Simpson overcome Penguin’s Gaylene Elsworthy in her semifinal, 25-22.
Bowls Tasmania executive officer Steve Tomlin said it was tough, windy conditions for competitors.
‘‘Van Asch is always under scrutiny of the national selectors and is a chance to represent Australia at this year’s Commonwealth games in Glasgow,’’ Tomlin said.
Van Asch, 25, was also successful when the team she skipped won the women’s triples event. the same week.

Van Asch along with lead Kim Saunders and Nicole Smith beat Holly Howell, Margaret Woodiwiss and Ruby Jamieson to the triples’
crown.
Van Asch became the first Tasmanian to win a lawn bowls world championship in December 2012, when she won the pairs with
Queenslander Kelsey Cottrell in Adelaide in December 2012.
