What to look forward to on the bowls calendar in 2023

by Val Febbo on January 4, 2023

Following an action packed calendar in 2022, bowls fans can expect an even bigger showcase of the sport in 2023 with a number of blue ribboned events to take centre stage.

After three pulsating editions last year, the Bowls Premier League (BPL) will be back on two occasions, with BPL17 to take place from February 20-24 at the Moama Bowling Club and BPL18 from November 13-17 at Club Pine Rivers.

Next month’s event could see history as the Melbourne Pulse trio of Barrie Lester, Ellen Ryan and Gary Kelly strive to take the franchise to the second ever three-peat in tournament history, as well as looking to become the first team to achieve the feat with an unchanged lineup.

From March 25-31 the Right at Home Jackaroos return to international competition with the Multi Nations on the Gold Coast before Aron Sherriff and Kelsey Cottrell head to the Warilla Bowls Club for the World Bowls Indoor Championships from May 7-13.

In June comes the true festival of bowls, the 2023 Australian Open on the Gold Coast.

It was a record breaking edition in 2022, and from June 10-23 you could have the chance to rub shoulders with some of the best bowlers in the world, as well as enjoying some winter sun for as little as $55 per entry.

Following on from the Australian Open, Club Tweed plays host to the Australian Indoor Championships From August 14-17.

At the conclusion of August comes the 2023 World Bowls Championships to be staged on the Gold Coast.

From August 29 to September 10 the world’s best bowlers will converge on Australia’s sunshine state and battle it out for one of the most coveted prizes in the sport.

The last World Championships to take place was all the way back in 2016, with the COVID-19 pandemic causing the postponement of the 2020 event to later this year.

The tournament will now take place on a biennial basis and the 2023 edition will include para disciplines for the first time in its history.

Following the World Championships, bowls fans will only need to wait a month for more action with The Nationals returning to the calendar for its second installment.

The inaugural multi tournament extravaganza took place with resounding success in October on the Gold Coast, but this year’s event will take Australia’s finest across the Nullarbor to Perth, who were recently announced as the event’s hosts in 2023 and 2026.

The Nationals will run from October 5-20.

In the immediate aftermath of BPL18 in November, Karen Murphy and Jono Davis will make the trek across the Tasman to Naenae for the World Champion of Champions.

The New South Wales pair claimed the Australian title in October and will strive for world glory against some of the best singles players from across the planet from November 18-23.
