2019 Australian Indoor Championships: Defending champs flex their muscle

by Bowls Australia on August 26, 2019

The defending champions of the Australian Indoor Championships have begun their title defence in style, with both Aaron Teys and Rebecca Van Asch safely securing passage through to the Quarterfinals after Day 1.

Having opened and closed the day’s play, the BCiB Australian Jackaroo pair failed to drop as they accounted for their opponents in the Round of 32 and 16, joining Warilla’s Pamela Willetts and St John’s Park star Matthew Pieterson as those qualified so far for the last eight of their respective draws.

Elsewhere, the major upset of the day belonged to Leisa Morgan who narrowly defeated two-time Commonwealth Games gold medalist Carla Krizanic in a Tie Break, while the likes of Barrie Lester, Aron Sherriff, Kristina Krstic, Karen Murphy, Dawn Hayman, Lynsey Clarke, Genevieve Delves, Samantha Noronha and Natasha Scott were among the notables to progress through to the Round of 16.

The performances of some of the locals were another highlight from the opening day, with Tweed’s Scott DeJongh-Fitzpatrick and John Bain both winning their first-up matches, much to the delight of the home crowd.

Day 2 of the 2019 Australian Indoor Championships will see the remaining Round of 16 matches completed, before Quarterfinals later in the day.
