2023 Multi Nations: Day 1 wrap

by Val Febbo on March 25, 2023

The Right at Home Jackaroos have enjoyed a successful day at the Broadbeach Bowls Club, finishing the opening day of the 2023 Multi Nations at the top of the table in five disciplines across Australia’s two squads.

In the men’s singles, Australia Green’s Aaron Wilson enjoyed a sensational day going undefeated against Norfolk Island, Hong Kong and Australia Yellow’s Aaron Teys, completing his trio of matches with a shot difference of plus 36.

Teys ended his third encounter in fourth place with two wins aside from the blemish to Wilson.

The men’s fours saw Australia’s Yellow team complete the three sessions on two wins and one loss with Jesse Noronha, Cody Packer, Aron Sherriff and Carl Healey thanks to victories over New Zealand and Norfolk Island, with their only defeat coming at the hand of Australia Green’s Barrie Lester, Matthew Lucas, Corey Wedlock and Ben Twist in their only win of the day.

The Green squad would fall victim to Norfolk Island by two shots in their first contest before suffering a 12-13 defeat at the hands of Hong Kong.

In the women’s pairs there are five teams sitting on the same ledger of two wins and one loss.

Australia Green’s Jamie Lee Worsnop and Dawn Hayman have completed day one on the top rung, with victories over Hong Kong and Australia Yellow’s Kristina Krstic and Karen Murphy, with their only defeat coming at the hands of Norfolk Island in the first clash of the morning.

Krstic and Murphy also concluded the day with just the solitary blemish to sit in fifth place but with plenty to play for over the coming days.

Like the pairs, the pulsating opening three rounds of women’s triples also saw a quintet of squads share an even standing of two wins and a defeat heading into the fourth round, with Australia Green sitting in first and Yellow in third.

Bolivia Millerick, Chloe Stewart and Kelsey Cottrell enjoyed a brilliant day in their home city, clinching victories over Norfolk Island and Hong Kong in the first and third matches respectively.

The wins were split with a defeat at the hands of Australia Yellow as Kylie Whitehead, Lynsey Clarke and Natasha Van Eldik took the intra-squad derby 18-12 before going on to defeat Norfolk Island.

Yellow’s only defeat came in match one, with New Zealand overcoming the trio 22-13.

In the para disciplines it was an undefeated day for Australia Green’s 2022 Commonwealth Games silver medallists Cheryl Lindfield and Serena Bonnell, who enjoyed a one-shot victory over Yellow’s Louise Hoskins and Jo Hunter in the first round before a comprehensive 21-6 trouncing of South Africa.

Hoskins and Hunter had a bye in the second round and will resume their competition at Musgrave Hill tomorrow morning.

The para men’s pairs saw Australia Yellow’s Damien Delgado and James Reynolds take an 18-15 victory over Green’s Tony Bonnell and Chris Flavel in their only match of the day before a bye in round two.

Bonnell and Flavel evened their ledger against South Africa to head into tomorrow’s action with an abundance of confidence.

In the vision impaired mixed pairs, debutant Jaqueline Hudson and 2018 Commonwealth Games gold medallist Jake Fehlberg completed the day undefeated for Australia Yellow, while Helen Boardman and Fred McConnell concluded the day in second with an even ledger from their two rounds.
