2024 Trans Tasman: Day 2 recap

by Val Febbo on February 3, 2024

After another big day of competition, honours were effectively split between Australia and New Zealand ahead of Sunday’s massive conclusion to the 2024 Trans Tasman series.

The Right at Home Australian Jackaroos had a strong first day of competition, but ran at just over a 50 per cent win rate on the second day of play with 15 wins and a draw from 30 matches, as the host nation battled hard to force deciding contests at Naenae.

Open men

The second session of the day saw Australia’s open men’s squad’s first blemishes of the event, dropping singles and fours contests for their first losses of the competition.

They quickly showed their quality in the third session however, bouncing back with a pairs 17-11 win to Aaron Wilson & Aaron Teys, while Corey Wedlock, Aron Sherriff and Carl Healey kept their triples run going with a 21-7 victory.

The open men have secured victory in their competition, with 10 wins giving them an unassailable wins margin with six matches to play.

Open women

The open women’s event is anyone’s for the taking, with just half a game separating Australia and New Zealand after two days of play.

Session one saw the results split, with Kelsey Cottrell defeating Tayla Bruce in the singles before Kristina Krstic, Dawn Hayman, Ellen Fife and Natasha Van Eldik tied 15-15 in their opening fours game.

Fife and Van Eldik were imperious in the women’s pairs in the second session, clinching a 19-8 victory in blistering fashion with Krstic, Hayman and Cottrell narrowly going down 17-15 in the triples.

It was all New Zealand in the final session as Bruce gained revenge on Cottrell with an epic 21-20 victory in the singles, while the fours team fell short in a 17-14 Blackjacks win.

Development men

Like day one, the three sessions and six contests were split down the middle as the battle for the development men’s crown intensifies.

New Zealand owned the opening session by winning both the triples and pairs contests before the Australian contingent got on the board thanks to Nathan Black’s third successive singles victory, while Nick Cahill, Matt Lucas, Cody Packer and Ben Twist fell agonisingly short in the fours.

The final session was owned by the Australians, flipping the results from the morning to tie up the ledger heading into the deciding day of the competition.

Development women

It was yet another successful day for the development women who all but ensured victory in their competition after a plethora of wins on day two.

It was a promising start for New Zealand as Briar Atkinson accounted for Jamie-Lee Worsnop in the singles to notch up the Blackjacks’ first victory in the event, before Cassandra Millerick, Brianna Smith, Kylie Whitehead and Chloe Stewart split the session in the fours.

Whitehead and Stewart would fall in the pairs to commence session two while Millerick, Smith and Worsnop dominated the triples to record a 23-15 win.

The final round was owned by Australia as Worsnop clinched the singles rubber and her teammates took home a closely fought fours win.

Para

The para contingent would split their contests with New Zealand evenly on day two, heading into the final pair of rounds a couple of wins behind their counterparts.

After having the opening session off, the para contingent would split the second session with a 17-13 win in the mixed pairs and a 12-4 defeat in the mixed fours.

The final session saw four contests take place, with Tony Bonnell recording a singles victory with the pairs combination of Calvin Rodgers and James Reynolds saluting in the pairs.

Louise Hoskins would fall in her singles contest, while Jacky Hudson and Serena Bonnell would succumb in their pairs matchup.
