Aussies advance after another unbeaten day

by Lachlan Williams on December 7, 2023

Australian duo Jessie Cottell and Nathan Black continue to fire at the IIBC World Under 25 Indoor Championships, moving towards the pointy end of proceedings following another unbeaten day on Wednesday.

The Aussie pair concluded their singles sectional rounds, both advancing unbeaten to the quarter finals.

They also advanced through the mixed pairs, setting up for a thrilling quarter final against Hong Kong.

Mixed Pairs

A final sectional round victory over Estee Parry (Wales) and Myles Ng (Macao) was enough to see Cottell and Black through to the knockout stages, exiting their group in second place with two wins and a loss.

Taking on Hong Kong China’s Gloria Ha and Langley Au Yeung, the Aussie duo had their work cut out for them.

Trailing 7-1 after five ends, the Aussies won the final two ends of the first set, falling short of winning it but carrying momentum into set two.

They flew out to a 4-0, before dropping six shots over the next four ends to trail 6-4 with one end remaining, needing to score a three to force a tiebreak.

In true Aussie fighting spirit, Cottell and Black dug deep to collect the three they needed, win the set 7-6 and force a one-end decider.

Riding high, the Australians took out the tiebreak to advance to the semi finals in a win described as ‘gutsy’.

For the second time this week, they will take on Ireland’s Shauna O’Neill and Ryan McElroy, with a place in the final up for grabs.

Only a tiebreak could split the teams in their sectional contest on Monday, with the Irish taking the win on that occasion.

Men’s Singles

Nathan Black had already secured his path to the knockout rounds before his final singles sectional game, but a final round win over Swizterland’s Jan Klossner helped him secure top place in his group.

Black lost just two of 14 ends in a comfortable 10-3, 15-0 win. He exited group play without a loss, and an impressive +44 shot difference.

He will face Namibia’s John-Pierre Fouche in Thursday’s quarter final.

Women’s Singles

Jessie Cottell continued her impressive form in the singles to move on to the knockout stage without a loss.

Facing off against South Africa’s Emma Murphy, Cottell took out the first set 10-5 before having to mount a comeback in the second.

Trailing 5-4 with two ends left in the second set, she scored a three and four on the last two ends to run away with the win.

Cottell also advanced without a loss, and a massive +74 shot difference.

She will take on Aimee Harris (Scotland) in the quarter final to be played on Thursday.
