Australia boasts twice the theoretical chance of their opponents to strike gold on the Broadbeach greens, with the host-nation fielding GREEN and GOLD teams in both genders, but at the same time, must spread their five best players across 10 positions.
Four of Australia’s teams are well placed to mount an attack on the coveted golden medallions, with the top-two spots progressing directly to the gold/silver medal final, while the other four teams are currently in third or fourth spot and as it stands right now, would play off in the bronze medal decider.
The men’s triples GREEN team of Wayne Ruediger, Corey Wedlock and Aron Sherriff continued their winning way to retain their top of the table standing after five of seven rounds, defeating Canada 26-10.
The GREEN women’s fours team of Chloe Stewart, Kristina Krstic, Carla Krizanic and Rebecca Van Asch have a 37 shot buffer over Canada in the standings, after upstaging them by 14 shots.
The GOLD men’s pairs combination of Brett Wilkie and Aaron Wilson were upstaged by New Zealand 9-12, and as a result they have fallen behind the unblemished Kiwis.
Both women’s singles teams enjoyed victories this morning, with GREEN team’s Natasha Scott defeating Canada’s Priscilla Westlake 21-16, while GOLD team’s Karen Murphy defeated New Zealand’s Jo Edwards 21-18.
Both teams are among a log-jam of five teams situated on 9 points, including with GREEN team 22 shots behind the Kiwis and 3 shots better than GOLD.
The penultimate and final sessions of these four disciplines will be staged today, before the competition turns to the opposite four disciplines tomorrow, with all finals occurring on Wednesday.
The para-sport’s mixed pairs and open triples also join the fray with the first round of action this upcoming session.
