Bowls rolls out the big guns in Tamworth

A contingent of Bowls Australia and BCiB personnel arrived in a tour de force visit to advise and talk to clubs from throughout the region in a special forum at the South Tamworth Bowling Club. Bowls Australia conducted a forum on lawn bowls in Tamworth yesterday as part of a tour de force and Jack Attack, as Geoff Newling reports for The Northern Daily Leader.

Bowls Australia’s  chairman Nigel Smith, chief executive officer Neil Dalrymple, Australian coach Steve Glasson, Bowling Club Insurance Brokers (BCIB)  managing director Ian Hopper, Australian selector and former Commonwealth Games gold medallist  Kelvin Kerkow, Australian and world champion Lynsey Clarke and current world singles and triples champion Karen Murphy arrived in a tour de force to advise and talk to clubs from throughout the region in a special forum at the South Tamworth Bowling Club.

Dalrymple said the forum enabled all the Zone 3 clubs to hear what Bowls Australia has planned.

“It also allows us to listen to what they have to say and how we can assist them,” he said.

They will also be part of a Jack Attack promotion at Tamworth City Bowling Club this morning.

Bowls Australia  and BCIB have extended a free invitation to any and all players and interested people to join in with them on the Jack Attack day.

Glasson said Jack Attack is lawn bowl’s T20 equivalent in cricket.

“It’s two sets of five ends with a one end tie-breaker,” he said.

“There is three to a team played in pairs with unlimited interchange.

“It’s all quick and done within an hour.”

Smith said Jack Attack is also similar to cricket in that it is a short form of the game designed to enhance the traditional game.

“We’ll still have the traditional games,”  Smith said.

“But people are time-poor and we hope this allows more people to play.”

Murphy said “it’s about being innovative.”

“It’s fast and exciting,” the current world champion said.

The Jack Attack starts at 9.30am.
