BPL19: Day 2 recap

by Val Febbo on February 20, 2024

An action packed day at the Moama Bowling Club has seen two franchises sitting with five wins apiece on top of the BPL19 table.

The Moreton Bay Pirates have enjoyed a stellar start to the new campaign after missing the finals in November, winning five of their seven matches leading into the third day.

Commencing the day with a pair of straight sets wins over the Melbourne eXtreme and the Gold Coast Hawks, the Pirates needed a tiebreak to overcome the Adelaide Pioneers in the concluding match of the day session.

Under new coach Ellen Falkner MBE, the squad of Dawn Hayman, Ryan Burnett and Alex Marshall MBE would take on the Sydney Lions in the penultimate broadcast match of the evening lineup.

Despite dropping the first set, the maroon squad managed to force a tiebreak before Aaron Wilson secured a fortunate result with the final bowl of the match.

Wilson and his teammates Ben Twist and Karen Murphy AM have joined the Pirates atop the table with a quintet of wins.

Steve Glasson OAM’s squad would start their morning with a win over the Pioneers before going down to the Moama Steamers in the middle matchup.

They would finish their afternoon lineup with a hard fought victory over the Tasmania Tridents thanks to some superb finishes from Twist.

Three franchises sit a win off the top of the ladder with four wins from the seven concluded rounds, with the Melbourne Pulse, eXtreme and Steamers enjoying fruitful days on the Murray.

A further trio of teams are another win behind with the Hawks, Tridents and defending champions in the Tweed Heads Ospreys closely breathing down the necks of their opponents currently in the finals places.

Adelaide and the Perth Suns sit in ninth and tenth respectively with two wins so far.
