BPL19: Day 3 recap

by Val Febbo on February 21, 2024

As the ten franchises round the bend into the second half of BPL19 at the Moama Bowling Club, one team stands above the rest with six matches to play before the finals.

The Moreton Bay Pirates sit alone at the top of the ladder thanks to yet another solid day that saw the Club Pine Rivers squad notch up a trio of wins to take their total tally to eight.

In fact, all four of the defeats for Ellen Falkner MBE’s team of Dawn Hayman, Ryan Burnett and Alex Marshall MBE have been in tiebreaks, meaning they are making their opponents work for everything.

Day three commenced in brilliant fashion for the team as they knocked off the Tasmania Tridents in an epic with Marshall landing an extraordinary final bowl to win the match.

Following that, the maroon squad would come from a set down to force a tiebreak against the Melbourne Pulse, who would ultimately prevail in a momentum swinging deciding end that saw some sensational shot making.

Tiebreak wins against the Melbourne eXtreme and Perth Suns would follow before the night matchup against the Moama Steamers, with the home team overcoming a strong test from their fellow tournament co-hosts.

The Pulse concluded the day in second place just one win off the pace thanks to three victories on Wednesday, with the Steamers equal on salutations in third position.

The Sydney Lions and Tridents round out the finals positions with six wins, with the Tweed Heads Ospreys making a charge late in the day to sit equal on victories.

Following the defending champions are four teams that sit on five wins, those being the Adelaide Pioneers, Perth Suns, Gold Coast Hawks and the Melbourne eXtreme.

Wednesday also marked a piece of BPL history, with Aron Sherriff becoming the first player to reach the 300 game milestone.
