Bungaree’s call for help to get their own green
Australia’s newest bowls club, Bungaree Bowling Club, is calling on the kindness and generosity of other lawn bowls clubs and members to help fund-raise for their first bowls green. Australia’s newest bowls club, Victoria’s Bungaree Bowling Club have issued a call for help to the wider lawn bowls community in an effort to raise $280,000 of funding needed to construct a green they can truly call their own.
The club, which is located 14 kilometres east of the regional centre of Ballarat, has gone from strength to strength since their formation late last year, boasting 45 members within its ranks including 34 brand new bowlers from a community population of just 1500, but it now faces the daunting task of acquiring significant fundraising money to build their first synthetic green.
The Ballarat Bowling Club were generous enough to host Bungaree’s home games in their inaugural season this year, but in order to establish their own identity and home club, Bungaree are rallying support from far and wide to enlist the assistance of fellow bowlers to make their dream of having their own green a reality.
Bungaree Bowling Club President Tony Trigg said the club was hopeful of receiving assistance from others within the lawn bowls community, but those clubs that are experiencing difficult times must look after their own members first and foremost.
“Bungaree has a community of approximately 1,500 people, so it’s a huge challenge for us to raise the $280,000 required to build a synthetic green,” Trigg said.
“Water restraints in this farming community means we simply can’t consider a grass green.
“We’re proud to belong to the bowling community of Australia, and we are now reaching out to the wider bowling community to see if they would consider supporting us in our efforts to achieve our fundraising goal, because without a green we don’t have a home.
“We are a small but committed club, but as we reach out to to the bowls community we certainly don’t want any club to feel compelled to support the Bungaree Bowling Club financially.”
Bungaree Publicity Officer John Maher echoed the sentiments of Trigg.
“The thing that’s become very evident to me is that the lawn bowling community has a big heart, I believe everyone realises that we’re all in the same boat and it’s tough,” Maher said.
“We’re really hopeful that a small donation by many individual clubs will add up to a significant total that will give us a chance to get our own green.”
