Cahill an eXtreme inclusion

by Bowls Australia on February 13, 2023

Reigning male bowler of the year Nick Cahill will taste his maiden Bowls Premier League (BPL) next week after an eleventh-hour change.

Cahill will don the Melbourne eXtreme uniform at Moama, replacing BPL15 All Star player Matthew Flapper in the 17th staging of the coveted televised event.

Flapper has relinquished his position at BPL17’s border-town battle for personal reasons, with Cahill stepping into the breach alongside fellow eXtreme debutant Natasha Van Eldik and foundation player Ali Forsyth.

The eXtreme looks forward to linking back up with Flapper in future events.

Cahill said he was thrilled to be debuting at the sport’s premier televised event and appreciative of eXtreme licensee Club Sunbury for the opportunity.

“I’m so excited about the opportunity and would love to thank Club Sunbury,” Cahill said.

“There’s a few nerves there, I’ve played a couple of TV games before but nothing in front of the crowd that I expect in Moama.

“But I’m going to relish this opportunity, I feel really good going into it and really prepared so hopefully I’ll be a good inclusion for the team.”

On the prospect of teaming up with Van Eldik and Forsyth, Cahill is bursting with excitement of having two of the world’s best alongside him on the Murray.

“They’re two of the best in the sport so it’s an honour to play with them, as it is with anyone of that calibre,” he said.

“Those two in particular are lovely people, I know them quite well and so we’ll be good teammates.”

The 20-year-old is no stranger to the big stage, having represented Australia and claiming two silver medals at the Junior World Bowls Indoor Championships in December, even using the same bowls that he will compete with next week.

The Queenslander enjoyed his first taste of competition in Moama after returning from abroad and is looking forward to the contests he will face.

“I’ll be using the same bowls as my trip to the UK, just in a different colour, so I think having that experience helps,” Cahill said.

“I also played in Moama just after returning home so playing two high level events one after the other was really good and having the experience of using those bowls on Moama’s greens is awesome as well.”

BPL17 will be contested next week at Moama Bowling Club, from February 20-24, 2023, with 24 hours of live broadcast on Fox Sports, Kayo and Sky Sports NZ across Tuesday to Friday evenings from 4pm-10pm AEDT, 3pm-9pm AEST.
