Club Pine Rivers and Geebung host international series

by admin on October 6, 2016

Australia and Malaysia set to meet in a test series prior to the World Championships commencing on November 29 In a precursor to the 2016 World Bowls Championships kicking off next month in Christchurch, two clubs in Brisbane’s Northern suburbs will host a serious hit out between Australia and Malaysia.

Both countries will be out to impress with just 53 days until the premier event on the international calendar commences, and it will be Club Pine Rivers and Geebung Bowling Club who will get an early look at how the two countries are faring in the lead up.

Club Pine Rivers, the home of the Bowls Premier League, is renowned for holding prestigious events but in a coup for Geebung, they will get their first taste of international competition.

Australia and Malaysia each boast Commonwealth Games gold medallist and World Champions among their 10 player squad and are no strangers to one another having met in a test series prior to the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Malaysia is a regular visitor to Australia having identified the Australian Open on the Gold Coast as a major event leading up to the 2016 World Championships and of course the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

National Coach Steve Glasson OAM is a strong believer that match play is of huge importance leading into a major international event.

“With our Jackaroos coming into camp this week, the excitement and anticipation really hits home now we are just weeks out from the World Championships,” said Glasson.

“Having the opportunity to play our friends from Malaysia on Tuesday and Wednesday is a huge benefit and will provide both countries a chance to have a really solid hit out.

“Huge thanks to Club Pine Rivers and Geebung Bowling Club for graciously hosting us in this important stage of preparations for our ‘Olympics of bowls’ kicking off in Christchurch on November 29.”

Australia and Malaysia will continue their training at Club Pine Rivers and Geebung Bowls Club; Australia will train until Friday October 14 and Malaysia will make the most of the long journey and continue their preparations until Saturday October 22.

Bowls Australia and Bowls Malaysia are both grateful to Club Pine Rivers and Geebung for giving up their greens and wish to invite spectators to come and watch these two great countries in action.
