Jono Davis and Ellen Ryan have a further chance to strike gold at the Commonwealth Youth Games after progressing to the semi-finals with a round to spare. Australia’s Ellen Ryan and Jono Davis have secured a second opportunity to strike gold at the 2015 Samoa Commonwealth Youth Games.

The duo cemented their spot in tomorrow’s mixed pairs semi-final after four rubbers today, reaching an unassailable position with a round to spare.

Flexing their muscle on the international arena, the pair produced four emphatic victories in the first day of the mixed competition, adding to their stellar record at the event so far.

Davis, who yesterday added to the nation’s golden medal haul in the boys’ singles, united with Ryan, who claimed a silver medal in the girls’ discipline, with an opening rubber win against South Africa, 19-11, followed by a comprehensive 35-8 performance against the local hopes, Samoa, followed by a 16-12 victory over the Cook Islands, before finishing the day with an unblemished record with a 18-10 over the highly fancied Northern Irish contingent in the penultimate round.

The pair will enjoy a moment of respite tomorrow morning, with a fifth round bye, but are destined to feature in the business end of the competition on the final day of the lawn bowls component after ensuring a top two finish in their section.

Bowls Australia wish Jono and Ellen the best of luck in the pointy end of the Commonwealth Youth Games.

Bowls Australia would like to acknowledge the assistance and funding provided by the Australian Commonwealth Games Association to Bowls Australia for athletes in the 2015-18 NextGEN AUSComGames Squad program.
