Ellen Ryan to be inducted into the Goulburn Mulwaree Sporting Hall of Fame

Australian Jackaroo Ellen Ryan will be inducted into the Sporting Hall of Fame in her home town of Goulburn in country NSW Tickets are now on sale for the 2016 Goulburn Sporting Hall of Fame Gala Dinner to be held on October 22nd at the Goulburn Soldiers Club.

2016 marks 25 years of the Sporting Hall of Fame, and the Gala Dinner is an event not to be missed, with many of the past inductees on the invitation list.

Over the past twenty five years many of Goulburn’s finest athletes across a wide variety of sports have been inducted, including Simon Poidevin (Rugby Union), Brett Ogle (Golf), Jason Croker (Rugby League), Jarred Croker (Rugby League), Bruce Devlin (Golf), Trevor Bayliss (Cricket) and Glenn Turner (Hockey), Goulburn’s most current Olympian.

This year five talented athletes will be inducted into the Sporting Hall of Fame.

The following athletes have excelled in their chosen sports and will be recognised for their accomplishments; Cameron Roberts (Triathlon & Duathlon), Ellen Ryan (Lawn Bowls), Peter Shepherd (Hockey), Henry Gundry (Rowing) and Cooper Mooney (Clay Target Shooting).

Councillor Margaret O’Neill, who has been extensively involved in the Sporting Hall of Fame from the beginning, said the night was a great way to honour high achieving local sports people.

“It takes years of commitment and hard work to be inducted into the Hall of Fame as it recognises those who have competed at a national or international level.

Sport plays a major role in our community, and many of Goulburn’s sporting organisations have been critical in the development of these athletes.”

The Sporting Hall of Fame’s initial home was at the McDermott Centre, where the inaugural 32 inductees had their biographies, photos and memorabilia on display.

In 1998 when the Hall of Fame outgrew the McDermott Centre it was moved to the Goulburn Soldiers Club. This year’s 25th anniversary induction dinner will be the last one held at the Goulburn Soldiers Club, as two recent grant applications to the Stronger Communities Grant Programme and the Veolia Mulwaree Trust were successful, and will aid in moving the Sporting Hall of Fame to the Grace Millsom Function Centre in 2017.

The Sporting Hall of Fame acknowledges the contribution made by local athletes who are, or have been recognised as, an ‘Australian Champion’ or ‘International Champion’ in any nationally recognised sport.

Glenn Turner was inducted into the Sporting Hall of Fame in 2011, is still a resident of Goulburn and has recently returned from the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

Tickets for the event are to be purchased from the Goulburn Soldiers Club with tables of 10 available. The induction ceremony and dinner will begin at 6pm on the 22nd of October; tickets cost $65 and will include a two course meal.
