About the Finance & Audit Committee

The Finance & Audit Committee is appointed by the Board and assists the Board in fulfilling its oversight responsibilities relating to the:

  • Preparation and integrity of the Organisation’s financial accounts and statements;
  • Internal controls, policies and procedures that the Organisation uses to identify and manage business financial risks;
  • Qualifications,     independence,      engagement,      fees       and      performance      of      the Organisation’s External Auditor;
  • External Auditor’s annual audit of the Organisation’s financial statements; and
  • Organisation’s compliance with legal, regulatory requirements and compliance policies.

The independent member appointed will join two Bowls Australia Directors on the committee.

Criteria

Mandatory criteria

To be eligible to be appointed an individual must:

  • Be independent of Bowls Australia and its State & Territory Associations i.e. cannot be an employee or hold an Official Position (e.g. as a Director) within those organisations
  • Be either a practicing Certified Public Accountant or Chartered Accountant
  • Be available to fulfill the duties outlined in the Finance & Audit Committee’s Term of Reference. The Committee currently meets five times per year. Meetings are generally online for 90 minutes from 5pm AEST/AEDT. 

Desirable criteria

In addition to meeting all mandatory criteria, the successful appointee will best address:

  • An understanding of the operating environment of not-for-profit organisations with a turnover of ~$10M, preferably within the context of the federated operating model of Australian sport
  • A strong understanding of best practice corporate governance and financial management. Completion of the Company Directors Course from the Australian Institute of Company Directors will be highly regarded.
  • Demonstrated experience on the Board and/or Finance & Audit Committee of a Company Limited by Guarantee or a Proprietary Company.

 ‘Additional Information and Instructions’ applicable to the vacancy:

  1. The position will be appointed at the discretion of the Bowls Australia Board with the intention of a circa three-year term commencing immediately following appointment and concluding in September 2027.
  2. Reflective of the sport’s participation base and endeavours – from community Bowls through to the international stages of Bowls and Para Bowls – Bowls Australia is committed to diversity and inclusion on its Board and its sub-committees and encourages nominations that will engender such.
  3. The positions is honorary. There are five (5) Finance & Audit Committee meetings per year, with additional scheduled if required. Meetings are usually scheduled online via videoconference, but may be scheduled in-person (for which travel costs are covered).
