Great Scott bundled out

Reigning champion Natasha Scott, has been sensationally eliminated from the 2017 Australian Indoor Championships in the opening session of play at Tweed Heads Bowls Club this morning. Middle Park’s Tara Ferrier has caused a boil over in the opening session of the 2017 Australian Indoor Championships, eliminating defending champion Natasha Scott.

Scott, who is the reigning national Indoor and Outdoor singles champion; having claimed last year’s Australian Indoor Championships and Australian Open titles, was taken to task by a determined Ferrier from the outset.

Ferrier secured the opening set 7-6 against last year’s Australia’s number one female bowler, after coming back from a 1-4 and then a 4-6 deficit, but was pushed to a tie-break decider after relinquishing the second set 6-8.

Scott looked to be mounting a late charge to defend her crown with 2 shots on the opening end, but found herself among the early casualty list after Ferrier secured a shot across each of the next three ends, including the sudden-death extra end.

Ferrier will enjoy a brief respite, but will be one of eight players to take to the green in their second round encounter tonight at 6pm, where she will face St Johns Park’s Jo Worlsey, who upstaged Bargara’s Adele Pershouse 8-3, 6-5.

Cabramatta’s Diana Davis will wait to know the name of her next opponent, after knocking out Engadine’s Natalie Noronha 9-3, 4-10, 5-0.

In the men’s event, three-time winner and reigning champion Jeremy Henry lives to fight another battle after escaping the carnage of the knockout format.

The indoor-surface juggernaut secured a 8-6, 10-7 first-up victory against Warrnambool’s David Wells, and will next encounter Bassendean’s Blake Nairn, who cruised to a 15-1, 12-3 win against Darwin’s Mark Diamond this morning.

The remaining men’s player to earn a berth in the second round of the $30,000 competition was Taelyn Male, who prevailed in one-and-a-half sets against Koroit’s Neil Crisp.

The event continues at Tweed Heads with further round one matches played from 10am, 12pm, 2pm, 4pm and 6pm local time, with an additional four matches of second round action also scheduled for 6pm.
