Indoors starting to take shape

The latter stages of the Australian Indoor Championships field is starting to look a little clearer. The Australian Indoor Championships field is starting to take shape, with just six more matches remaining to determine the full list of round two contenders.

Australian Jackaroo Kelsey Cottrell was among those who advanced through to the second round in the fifth session, defeating Broadbeach Bowls Club’s Melissa Larcombe 9-4, 8-7.

Cottrell will now face Samantha Noronha in the second round, after she defeated Invermay’s Kim Saunders 10-5, 7-7, with that match scheduled for 10.00am tomorrow.

Samantha’s twin sister, Natalie, is also alive in the tournament is set to battle Cottrell’s 2012 World Bowls Championships pairs gold medal winning teammate Rebecca Van Asch tomorrow morning from 8.00am.

Also progressing through is Tasmania’s Rosie Geeves, who knocked out Taren Point’s Claire Kelly 10-7, 3-9, 4-0.

Geeves faces a challenging task a head though, in Canadian international Kelly McKerihen.

In the men’s event, South Australia’s Steven Grant defeated Victoria’s Chris LeLievre 8-4, 9-7, Kyneton Golf’s Anthony Mathison edged out Rosney Park’s Nick Ellis 2-8, 9-3, 6-0, and while despite being some 1,700km from their usual stomping ground, Curtis Hanley prevailed in the battle with his Melbourne clubmate Robert Biglia 10-7, 10-4.

The fifth session of the opening round sees Ian Taylor face Shane Waddingham, Chris Pollock play Simon Lyttle, Kristy Thatcher encounter Kim Suckley and Jessica Hogan square off against Ellen Ryan.

Following that is the sixth session from 6.00pm, where Australian Open winners Aron Sherriff and Natasha Scott feature, against Nathan Dawson and Kirsty Van Den Hoff respectively, and defending champions Jeremy Henry and Carla Krizanic take to the carpet for their second round rubber.
