Jack Attack a hit in the Hunter

Bowls Australia’s (BA) popular nationwide Jack Attack (JA) program has launched with success in the Hunter region with Edgeworth Sport and Recreation Club recently completing a great first season.

Eager to peak the interest of local businesses and corporate bowlers, Bowls Coordinator Mick Kedwell quickly realised that Jack Attack was the perfect fit.

The format, resources and support from local RBM Mark Whiteman meant that all that was required were the players.

On a warm summers day, Kedwell and Whiteman created a plan to visit as many local businesses as possible, armed with information about a new JA program.

The result was excellent with the commitment from eight businesses, including the likes of Henny Penny (2 teams), Bakers Delight (2), Hunter Valley Stone Masons and Edgeworth Tavern.

As launch night rolled around, the teams gathered at the club, some eating dinner in the bistro before the game, and then down poured the rain.

Once the green went under water, Kedwell had no choice but to postpone the opening round despite several enthusiastic teams still wanting to go out and play in the pouring rain.

This enthusiasm continued each week as the new bowlers quickly learned how much fun bowls really is.

On the final evening, there was excitement in the air as teams played the final game not knowing the current standings overall.

When the final bowl was played, one Edgeworth Tavern team member said in disappointment, “Now I have nothing to do on a Tuesday night!”

It was very clear the camaraderie that had developed during the season, with another team member expressing, “this bowls competition has brought the business community together in a fun and competitive way.”

All teams have committed to another season and the club is confident of expanding the number of teams due to the positive feedback.

The winners were Henny Penny Market Town who picked up $300 and the title of Edgie Bowlo Jack Attack Champions.
