Jackaroos converge at Ettalong

by admin on August 14, 2016

10 Australian Jackaroos will compete in the 24th annual Ettalong Prestige Fours including the men’s and women’s World Bowls Fours combinations The Australian Jackaroos will be on show at this week’s Ettalong Prestige Fours, the home club of Australian Singles representative Aron Sherriff.

The 24th staging of the tournament, to be played from August 17 to 19, has attracted a capacity field of 48 teams with quality players from all around Australia.

The men’s and women’s World Bowls Fours combinations will use the popular Ettalong Fours tournament as a practice event leading into the premier international event on the bowls calendar, the 2016 World Bowls Championships in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Ettalong have kindly extended an invitation to the women’s fours team, who will compete against 47 men’s teams in the $15,000 tournament, whilst Ettalong will also host a NSW/ACT NTC team skipped by another Australian Jackaroo Aaron Teys.

Barrie Lester, Brett Wilkie, Aaron Wilson and Mark Casey make up the Australian men’s team, while the Australian ladies four comprise of Carla Krizanic, Rebecca Van Ash, Natasha Scott and Kelsey Cottrell who will create history by becoming the first female team to compete in the event.

This year will be the second time Ettalong have hosted a World Championship bound men’s fours team, which Coach Gary Willis says has been proven recipe of success for the Jackaroos in the past.

“The Australian men’s fours team won the Ettalong Prestige Fours in 2012 and went on to claim one of Australia’s five gold medals at the 2012 World Championships in Adelaide,” said National Assistant Coach Gary Willis.

“This year I’m excited by the prospect of having two Australian teams in the event and I know Bowls Australia is grateful for the continued support from the Ettalong Bowls Club to allow Bowls Australia to enter teams into their renowned tournament.

“This event will be a great hit out for both our men’s and women’s fours teams as we prepare for the World Championships and all of the players are looking forward to competing in a quality tournament.”

Local hero Aron Sherriff, 2016 Australian Open Singles Champion and Australia’s singles representative at the World Championships will skip a side of young stars; 12 year old Ettalong junior Bailey Meti will lead, along with Greg Jeans and Harley McDonald who were both members of Warilla’s grade one State Pennant winning side this month.

A pre-tournament dinner and a meet and greet evening with the Australian Jackaroos will be held on Tuesday August 16 at 7pm where the draw for the event will be conducted live.
